R35 GT-R fuel system upgrade: E85, pumps, hanger and injectors

Running E85 or more boost on an R35 GT-R takes more fuel, so the pumps, injectors and tune change together. This guide covers what the factory system has, the parts that replace it, and the order to plan them in with your tuner.

E85 and the standard R35

Nissan's owner's manual says the GT-R is not designed to run on E-15 or E-85 fuel, and that fuel with up to 10% alcohol may be used if necessary. Running E85 is a conversion planned with your tuner, not just a change of fuel.

Injector Dynamics gives the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio of an 85% ethanol blend as just under 10:1, against about 14.7:1 for petrol. So the engine needs much more fuel for the same air, and the fuel system has to keep up.

Injector Dynamics also points out that the ethanol content of E85 can vary, and recommends monitoring it, for example with a fuel composition sensor. Haltech says its flex fuel sensor measures ethanol content, so a flex fuel ECU can adjust the tune for the blend.

In-tank pumps and the Radium hanger

The R35 GT-R (2007 on) has two fuel pumps in the tank. Radium's R35 fuel hanger replaces the factory in-tank unit and takes up to three 39 mm pumps, brushed, brushless or a mix. The pumps sit in a collector box kept full by a one-way valve, the retained factory jet pumps and fuel returning from the regulator. Radium says it fits without permanent changes to the tank. Fuel leaves through a single 10AN ORB female port and comes back through an 8AN ORB female port. The version we list comes without pumps.

Before you order, plan these with your tuner:

  • The hanger removes the factory filter after the pumps, so it needs an aftermarket filter downstream.
  • The factory wiring runs two pumps, so a third pump needs its own wiring.
  • Radium lists its R35 feed line kit for left-hand-drive cars only, so the feed lines on a right-hand-drive UK car need planning separately. HKS also makes a fuel pump upgrade for the R35.

Injectors and rails

We list three Injector Dynamics sets of six for the R35: the ID1050-XDS, a 1300cc set and the ID1750X. Flow, length and connector all have to suit your rail, and your tuner sizes the injectors for your power target and fuel. HKS makes an injector upgrade kit and a twin injector Pro kit for the R35, and Radium makes an R35 fuel rail plumbing kit. ASNU's third fuel rail adds six more injectors to the standard R35 inlet manifold once the manifold has been machined, and it's made for ASNU side-feed injectors.

The order to plan it in

  • Power target and fuel, agreed with your tuner.
  • Pumps, hanger, wiring and filter.
  • Feed and return lines.
  • Injectors and rails.
  • The tune.

Ordering

Tell us your car and your plan by email or the contact form, and we'll confirm fitment before you pay. HKS parts come from Japan and usually take 1 to 2 weeks at the minimum.

FAQ

Can a standard R35 GT-R run on E85?

Not as it leaves the factory. Nissan says the GT-R is not designed to run on E-85. A conversion needs more fuel delivery and a tune built for the fuel, so plan it with your tuner.

How many fuel pumps does a standard R35 GT-R have?

Two, both in the fuel tank. For more fuel, the pumps can be upgraded, or the whole in-tank unit can be replaced with a hanger that takes more pumps.

Does the Radium R35 fuel hanger come with pumps?

The Radium hanger we list, part 20-0572, comes without pumps. It takes up to three 39 mm pumps, so choose them with your tuner.
