Many of the parts we sell come from Japan. This is a plain guide to the charges, with links to GOV.UK for the detail. It is not tax advice.
Duty
Vehicle parts fall under commodity heading 8708. The rate depends on the full 10-digit code, and many lines are 2%. Check the current rate on GOV.UK.
Import VAT and the £135 rule
Import VAT is 20%. For goods up to £135, the seller charges VAT at the point of sale. Above £135, import VAT and any duty are due when the goods arrive. The low-value rules are under review.
UK–Japan CEPA
A lower duty rate under the UK–Japan CEPA needs evidence of origin, such as a statement on origin or the importer's knowledge.
