RB26 rebuild parts list: refresh, fast road and big power

The RB26DETT is a 2,568 cc straight-six with an 86 mm bore and a 73.7 mm stroke. This list groups the parts we sell by build level. We supply parts; your engine builder does the build.

Every rebuild

  • Gasket kit and head gasket
  • Rod bolts
  • Rod and main bearings, chosen to measured clearances
  • Timing belt, tensioner, idler and water pump

Fast road

Head studs are a common step on faster builds, often with main studs at the same time.

Big power

These are the pistons, rods and cranks we list. Agree sizes and specs with your engine builder.

Nitto's RB30 Wide Journal Drag Stroker Kits come in 3.2, 3.4 and 3.6 litre sizes, with aluminium Nitto/Carrillo connecting rods. Nitto designs them for all-out drag and high horsepower builds, and says the 3.6 litre kit is for billet blocks only.

Billet blocks

Bullet Race Engineering makes the Nissan RB26 Billet Block, machined from 6061 billet aluminium with four-bolt mains. Bullet lists a remote oil filter kit as needed to fit it, and the head's stud holes must be drilled out to 14 mm. Bullet's RBx Drag Extreme Billet Block is a drag-only RB30 block, and it needs a dry sump.

Dry sump oiling

Some big power builds use a dry sump. Kiwi CNC and Platinum Racing Products both make billet dry sump pans for the 4WD RB, with the front diff housing built in.

  • Kiwi CNC Nissan RB 4WD Billet Dry Sump Pan and Diff Housing: made in New Zealand from 6061-T6 aluminium, with a removable diff housing that suits the R32 and R33 4.11:1 and R34 3.54:1 gear sets. Kiwi CNC sells it on its own or with a Dailey Engineering 5-stage pump, and offers an oil pump blank as an option.
  • Platinum Racing Products RB 4WD dry sump kit: a one-piece billet pan with a Dailey Engineering 5-stage pump and air separator, and a removable diff assembly.

Ask your engine builder which oiling set-up suits your build.

Fuel system

More power needs more fuel, and most builds upgrade the fuel system in stages.

  • In-tank pump: Tomei makes 255 L/h and 350 L/h in-tank pumps for the R32 GT-R, and separate ones for the R33 and R34 GT-R. Tomei says they bolt on to the stock adapters. Our GT-R fuel pump upgrade guide shows which one fits your car.
  • Twin pumps or a surge tank: Radium Engineering's late Nissan fuel pump hanger fits the R33 and R34 Skyline and takes one or two pumps. Its Fuel Hanger Surge Tank (FHST) for the R32 GT-R is a surge tank inside the stock fuel tank, with one, two or three pumps feeding the engine and a lift pump keeping the surge tank full. Radium says a lift pump is needed in every install, the pumps are sold separately, and the FHST works with E85.
  • Mechanical pumps: the biggest builds can use a mechanical pump, driven off the engine rather than electrically. Platinum Racing Products makes a mechanical fuel pump kit for its 4WD RB dry sump. It runs off the dry sump belt at half engine speed and has a coupling to suit a Kinsler pump. Kinsler rates its Series 2 Tough Pump mechanical pumps at 8.68, 10.62 and 12.58 GPM at 4,000 pump rpm and 100 psi.

E85: if you run E85, every part that touches the fuel needs to be rated for it, from the pump and hanger to the lines, fittings, filter and rail. Check this on each maker's page. Radium and Aeromotive both say their PTFE fuel hose suits E85, and Aeromotive says PTFE line won't harden, micro-fracture or let fuel vapour through like normal rubber braided line. Radium says PTFE hose needs PTFE-specific hose ends, and that not all fuel line can be fully submerged in the tank. For filters, Aeromotive recommends its 10-micron Microglass element for alcohol fuels. E85 also needs more fuel than petrol for the same power, so see our RB26 injector upgrade guide.

Ask your tuner which fuel system suits your power target and fuel.

Gearbox

Stock gearboxes have limits, so ask your builder what yours will take at your power level. These are the main options, from the factory gearbox up.

  • Stock and R34 Getrag: Nissan lists a five-speed manual for the R32 GT-R. The R34 GT-R has a Getrag six-speed, and NISMO has offered a Getrag six-speed conversion kit that fits it to the R32 and R33 GT-R. NEAT Gearboxes in Australia makes upgrade parts for the R34 GT-R's Getrag (the V160), including billet selector forks, a billet mid plate made with Albins, and synchro sets.

Some owners run the R34 Getrag in high power builds, but that doesn't mean it will last. How long any stock gearbox survives depends on the power, how the car is driven and how well the gearbox is maintained.

  • Sequential gearboxes: Samsonas designs its Nissan GTR sequential gearboxes for the R32, R33 and R34 GT-R. PPG makes a six-speed sequential with a billet case for the R32, R33 and R34 GT-R, and Albins offers its low-profile ST6-LP six-speed sequential as a swap for the Nissan GT-R.
  • Automatic and DCT conversions: HPR Tuning makes kits to fit an 8HP automatic or a seven-speed BMW M dual-clutch gearbox (DCT) to the Skyline GT-R, and says neither needs chassis modifications. HPR says its DCT kit keeps the stock ATTESA 4WD, and its 8HP kit uses an R32 or R33 transfer case.
  • Drag-only: ATI makes an adapter kit (915222) to fit an RB26 to a Chevy Powerglide or Turbo automatic. It needs an ATI custom 8-inch converter, and ATI says an OEM bellhousing needs modifying for starter clearance.

Ask your builder which gearbox suits your power target and how you use the car.

FAQ

What should I replace in every RB26 rebuild?

A gasket kit, rod bolts, rod and main bearings chosen to measured clearances, and the timing belt, tensioner, idler and water pump.

Do I need head studs?

They are a common step on faster builds, often with main studs. Ask your engine builder which kit to use.

What are the RB26 bore and stroke?

An 86 mm bore and a 73.7 mm stroke, for 2,568 cc.

Is there a billet block for the RB26?

Yes. Bullet Race Engineering makes the Nissan RB26 Billet Block in 6061 billet aluminium. Its RBx Drag Extreme Billet Block is a drag-only RB30 block that needs a dry sump.

Who makes a dry sump for the RB26 GT-R?

Kiwi CNC and Platinum Racing Products both make billet 4WD RB dry sump pans with the front diff housing built in, and both offer them with a Dailey Engineering 5-stage pump. Ask your engine builder which suits your build.

How do I fuel a big power RB26?

In stages. An uprated in-tank pump comes first, then twin pumps or a surge tank with a lift pump, and the biggest builds can use a mechanical pump driven off the engine. Ask your tuner which fuel system suits your power target and fuel.

What gearbox options are there for a big power RB26?

Stock gearboxes have limits, so ask your builder. Options include the R34 GT-R's Getrag six-speed with upgrade parts such as NEAT Gearboxes', sequentials from Samsonas, PPG and Albins, HPR Tuning's 8HP and DCT conversions, and Powerglide or Turbo automatics for drag-only cars.

Do you build engines?

No. We supply parts. Your engine builder does the build.
