R35 GT-R blow-off valves: HKS Super SQV4 vs Turbosmart SmartPort

The R35 has two factory blow-off valves, left and right, and they return air to the intake. HKS makes a Super SQV4 that replaces the factory valve and one that goes with its intercooler piping. Turbosmart's SmartPort kit replaces both factory valves. We supply parts; your specialist fits them.

Recirculating or vent

HKS's R35 SQV4 kits return the air to the intake (suction) pipes, as the factory valves do. Turbosmart's SmartPort can recirculate or vent to atmosphere. Venting is a choice to make with your tuner, so ask before you change it. Our Skyline blow-off valve guide explains how the two types differ.

HKS says the 71008-AN027 kit replaces the factory rubber hoses and cast pipes with polished aluminium pipes, and still returns the air to the suction pipes.

Turbosmart Dual Port SmartPort

Turbosmart's R35 kit has a left and a right valve made for the car, and they fit with the standard bolts and the supplied gaskets. It is a dual port valve: a supplied blanking plug sets it to full recirculation or to full vent to atmosphere. Vent mode needs extra parts, so ask your fitter which ones.

Fitting

Turbosmart recommends that a suitably qualified technician fits and adjusts its valves, and that a boost gauge is permanently fitted. Have your specialist fit either make, and set it up with your tune.

FAQ

Do I need upgraded blow-off valves on a tuned R35?

Not always, so ask your tuner. You do need HKS's chamber pipe SQV4, 71008-AN027, if you fit the HKS intercooler piping kit 13002-AN003, because HKS says the kit needs it. Otherwise HKS's replacement type and Turbosmart's SmartPort both replace the factory valves and can keep the air returning to the intake.

Which HKS SQV4 fits my R35?

It depends on your pipework. 71008-AN029 replaces the factory air bypass valve and connects to the factory air bypass hose. 71008-AN027 is the chamber pipe type for HKS's intercooler piping 13002-AN003. The 13002-AN004 piping kit already includes an SQV4, so you don't buy one separately with it.

Can an R35 blow-off valve vent to atmosphere?

Turbosmart's Dual Port SmartPort can. Its supplied blanking plug sets it to full recirculation or full vent to atmosphere, and vent mode needs extra parts your fitter can advise on. HKS's R35 SQV4 kits keep a suction return to the intake. Venting is a choice to make with your tuner, so ask before you change it.

What comes in the Turbosmart SmartPort R35 kit?

Turbosmart lists a left and a right valve made for the R35, two port blanking plugs, two gaskets, four hose clamps and two lengths of vacuum line. The valves fit with the standard bolts. Turbosmart recommends that a qualified technician fits and adjusts them, and that a boost gauge is permanently fitted.
